Navigating Motherhood’s Biggest Transition: The Story Behind Our 4th Trimester Workshop

January 12th 2025 marks 15 years since I became a mum. At my first ultrasound they found a cyst on my ovary that they monitored at regular intervals for growth, it didn't grow but what it did do is block the birth canal so Eli was born by elective caesarean section. Interestingly the cyst was difficult to find at delivery, the consultant was bought in to find it, it weighed 1kg. We were also told during our many scans that because Eli was forced to share the pelvis with this cyst his head had moulded into a funny shape. He was born at 12.10pm, a bluebird summers day with a perfectly round head and he was absolutely delicious. Happy Birthday Eli!

The Early Days: A Lesson in Motherhood

Eli was what many would call a unicorn baby - he ate well, slept soundly, and rarely cried. It was as though he wanted to make my transition into motherhood as smooth as possible. Little did I know that his younger brother, Seb, would give me a very different parenting experience!

But even with Eli's calm temperament, those early days were a whirlwind. At just six weeks postpartum, I returned to university to complete the second year of my midwifery degree. My husband Jeremy, worked shift work and juggling the demands of study, motherhood, and everyday life quickly became overwhelming.

One day it all go a bit much, I sat in tears, ready to give up on my studies. It felt like too much. Thankfully, my mum stepped in, taking Eli for a few days so I could breathe, gather myself, and decide how to move forward. With her support, I realised I could keep going - and I did. That moment was a powerful reminder of the importance of community, of having someone who says, I’ve got you. Thank you mum.

The Inspiration Behind Our 4th Trimester Workshop

I was a nurse working in paediatrics and had completed 1 year of midwifery studies before Eli was born. I naively thought I knew what I was in for when he arrived but, I can distinctly remember feeling panicked and looking over at Jeremy while we were still in theatre, Eli was on my chest and I said to him..."What on earth do we do now?".

I've seen that same look over and over and over again in the almost 20 years I've worked in healthcare, and it was these experiences, both personal and professional, that inspired the creation of the 4th Trimester Workshop. My goal was simple: to give parents the tools, knowledge, and support I wish I had during those early days with Eli.
