Breastfeeding is often described as "natural"—but let’s be honest, that doesn’t mean it’s easy. As a midwife, mum of three, and founder of Lila Jasmine, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges new mums face when trying to establish breastfeeding.
Here are my top golden tips to make the journey smoother:
1. Recognize Feeding Cues Early
It’s much easier to latch a calm baby than one who is distressed. Watch for these early cues:
- Sucking on hands
- Rooting - turning head toward a touch on their cheek
- Opening and closing their mouth
By responding early, you set the stage for a calm and successful feed. It's very difficult to latch a crying baby.
2. Perfect the Latch
A good latch should feel strong but not painful. Some quick tips:
- Line baby’s nose up with your nipple, not their mouth
- Aim for baby to take in more of the bottom part of the areola
- If it hurts after 10 seconds, break the latch with your pinky and try again
3. Fuel Your Body Because Breastfeeding is Work!
Breastfeeding burns 500+ calories a day, meaning your body needs extra fuel to keep up. Staying nourished supports:
- Milk supply
- Your own energy levels...hello, sleep deprivation!
- Healing and recovery
This is exactly why I created Lila Jasmine lactation bars - so mums have an easy, grab-and-go option packed with nourishing ingredients that support milk production. They’re made with oats and flaxseed [natural galactagogues], plus protein and fiber to keep you feeling strong.
4. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!
Milk is 80% water, and dehydration can lead to lower supply and fatigue. Aim for 3L of water daily, I recommend you have a glass of water during each feed. Herbal teas and coconut water are great too!
5. Seek Support - You Deserve It!
Every breastfeeding journey is different. If you’re struggling with pain, low supply, or latching issues, reach out to:
- A lactation consultant
- Your LMC midwife
- Peer support groups such as La Leche League
- Apps such as BreastFedNZ or Birth & Beyond
Remember - fed is best, and a happy mum is just as important as a full baby.
